The tragic love story of Bess, a pretty young woman with a history of psychological problems and Jan, an atheist oil rig worker in a repressed Calvinist community in the Scottish Highlands. Divided into seven chapters, a captivating and emotional experience from beginning to end. A look into the themes of religion, psychology, sex, life, death and salvation.
A distinct visual style, filmed on Panavision equipment, transferred to video and back to film. Heavily influenced by the Dogme 95 movement. Beautiful and rich, a must see film from both a technical and storytelling standpoint. Masterclass direction from one of the most provocative auteurs in cinema, Danish director and screenwriter Lars Von Trier.
Part of his Golden Heart Trilogy, which also includes The Idiots (1998) and Dancer in the Dark (2000).
An incredible performance by Emily Watson in the lead role of Bess McNeill, which earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination (lost to Frances McDormand in Fargo).
Winner of the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival and three awards at the 1996 European Film Awards, including Film of the Year.

Breaking The Waves Cast: Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgård, Katrin Cartlidge, Jean-Marc Barr, Udo Kier
